Case Study : Stockland Baldivis Public Art

Transforming Baldivis with public art

The Place

The Baldivis Shopping Centre, in the heart of the growing area of Baldivis, is transforming through a $116m redevelopment by Stockland, planned to open mid-2015.

The Shopping Centre will become a social and community hub for the local community, complementing the new neighbouring Mary Davies Library and Community Centre, and providing residents and workers with new shopping, dining and entertainment experiences.

Our Role

Following the completion of the Stockland Baldivis Shopping Centre Place Activation Plan, Place Match delivered the ‘#wallsandmalls Public Art Project’ – the Centre’s first public art project and the first of its kind for Stockland nationally.

The project involved the commissioning of acclaimed multidisciplinary artists Kyle Hughes-Odgers and Beastman (Brad Eastman) to create two large murals for the community that reflects Baldivis and the theme of ‘connections: uniting people, place and environment’.

The artists also visited the local high school to talk with students and have an information session about life as an artist and the process of creating art in the public realm.

Our role included:

  • Project planning and defining the approach and scope
  • Developing art brief and engaging local, national and international artists
  • Managing artist evaluation process and appointment
  • Project management of the commissioning and implementation
  • Managing community and youth engagement
  • Assisting with documentation, marketing and promotion.

Creative place making is not just about delivering creative projects, but rather delivering a lasting cultural, economic, social and environmental impact.

A key focus on local youth engagement encouraged ownership and discussion within the local community, with the artists collaborating to provide a unique public artwork that engages, inspires reflects the local identity.

Although this project was delivered in a short timeframe, it will have a lasting effect and connection with the community and broader exposure for the Stockland Baldivis Centre through its online promotion.

  • Community development
  • Youth engagement
  • Public art commission
  • Public art facilitation and delivery
